COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Police say they rescued a young man who was threatening to commit suicide from a water tower in Ashland on Tuesday.
Police were called to the water tower on North Henry Clay Boulevard around 10:20 a.m. for a report of a young man who wanted to commit suicide by jumping from the tower, according to a Facebook post from the Ashland Police Department.
Police and sheriff’s deputies used a drone to find the young man sitting on the ledge of a water tower about 100 feet in the air, the report said. Police and fire departments from Boone County and Columbia responded to the scene to assist, and the 500 block of Henry Clay was closed while they responded, the release said.
An Ashland police officer contacted the youths by phone and spoke with them as Columbia firefighters climbed the tower, the department said. The young man was safely shot down about an hour after the call.
The water tower is surrounded by a locked gate and the stairs are burglar-resistant, the report said.
The young man’s name will not be used for privacy reasons, police say.
